Kimberly Van Der Beek confirmed his death Wednesday morning. He was just 48 years old. The actor had been privately fighting stage 3 colorectal cancer since 2023.

Immediately following the announcement, a GoFundMe titled “Support for James Van Der Beek's family” went live. The situation is dire.

Despite his successful career, the "long and brave battle" drained the family’s resources. They are now struggling to cover basic living expenses, bills, and their children's education.

James leaves behind his wife, Kimberly (married 2010), and their SIX young children: Joshua, Jeremiah, Olivia, Annabel, Emilia, and Gwendolyn. “The children are facing an uncertain future.”

The public has already responded. As of Wednesday afternoon, the campaign had raised over $400,000. Donations continue to pour in from fans worldwide.

This isn’t the first time the family asked for help. In late 2025, James auctioned his most prized memorabilia to pay for treatment. – Dawson’s necklace from Dawson’s Creek sold for $26,628

Cobra Kai star Paul Walter Hauser noticed James selling his belongings. “It didn’t sit well with me,” Hauser said. Hauser raised over $14,000 via Cameo videos specifically for James’s care.

James’s story highlights a brutal Hollywood truth: health crises can bankrupt anyone, regardless of fame. Colorectal cancer treatment can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, even with insurance.

The Van Der Beeks are trying to "maintain some stability" and keep their children in school. Rest in peace, James. 1977 - 2026.
